Storage Management & Storage Area Networks (SANs)
Storage management also improved in Windows Server 2003. Virtual Disk Service (VDS) gives integrated interface for multivendor devices. VDS find out the devices in network and gives a single place for management. SANs surround a pool of hard drives, optical drives or other storage devices. It devastates less storage space because we can share the disks between all of our servers. SANs offer high bandwidth with zero latency, and eliminate I/O bottlenecks from networks. SANs have own optical fiber channel network. Backups and restoring services fulfill over that network, more willingly than going over our production network. This stores traffic over network and vastly speeds up our backups. Fiber networks run at 1 to 2GB/sec. In Server 2003, Volume Shadow Copy allows to create a snapshot of volumes. So users can easily complete the tasks of shadow copy restores. NTBackup also uses for backup surety that all files are backed up.
