Software Update Infrastructure in Windows Server 2003
Software Update Infrastructure in Windows Server 2003
If your company is buying its first Windows server, you are going to have to decide between upgrading or performing a clean install. Each process has its own advantages and disadvantages:
- Upgrading the windows care for your existing settings, such as users and groups, permissions and rights, and applications.
- Clean installation can develop the hard drive’s performance, because of reformation during installation and also provide a chance to change the partition and volume sizes of hard disk drives. Is also ensures that you don’t carry over any existing problems that you might have with your current OS. I personally prefer clean installs because they have seen many problems related to OS upgrades in the past.

Hardware Compatibility Wizard for Windows Server 2003
Common Installation Issues
Hardware and software incompatibilities are the major problems to installing a new OS. At a minimum, you need the following hardware configuration:
- 133MHz processor
- 128MB of RAM
- 1.5GB hard drive
But suggested hardware is at least a 550MHz CPU & 256MB RAM. You should also authenticate hardware compatibility before initializing installation from the installation CD because there is a system compatibility check. Even if all of the hardware is supported, you must update machine’s BIOS to the most recent version.
Checking System Compatibility
You can check your hardware for compatibility in two ways. All of the parts are available on Microsoft’s site, can be found from the Compatibility wizard on the installation CD. The wizard is obviously the easier of the two. Follow these steps to use the Compatibility Wizard:
- Put in the Windows Server 2003 CD.
- Double-click on My Computer.
- Double click on the CD-ROM. (Use AUTORUN to start)
- Click on the Check system compatibility link.
- Click on the Check my system automatically link. This will start the Compatibility Wizard.
- Now you will prompted to get update setup files. This is not necessary to check out your hardware. Click the radio button for No, skip this step and continue installing Windows.
- Click Next. Windows check out your system. Once it is finished, it will display any issues that might interfere with installing Windows. And click Finished to end the wizard.
