Windows Server 2003 has improved the file system and printing services with a tool to manage our file system (FS) by making the tool run faster; this done the jobs in less time. The DFS and the FRS have also been improved to manage the printing as faster and easier.
File System Features
WebDAV is the new support feature of Server 2003, which allows remote sharing. Through standard FS calls, users can access the files stored in Web repositories. However, users think they are making requests to their local FS, but the requests are actually being fulfilled via Web resources. It is easier to manage disks in this server by including a command-line interface. With command-line, we can do tasks such as partitions and volumes management, RAID configuration, defragmentation, extending basic disk, FS tuning and shadow copy management. The CHKDSK tool, which is used to find errors on Windows volumes, has been renovated. DFS and FRS have also been improved. DFS allows us to create a single logical tree view for more than one server, so that all directories appear to be on the same server. FRS is used to replicate DFS file share data. FRS allows administrators to configure its replication topology and compress replication traffic.
The best FS improvement in this Server is shadow copies. Enabling shadow copies on server and installation of client software on the client computer, users can view the previous versions by right-clicking those were backed-up. Then users can keep the current version of the file or roll back to an early version. It’ll be helpful to remove the burden of simple file restores from our IT staff and allow the users to handle it themselves.
Printing Features
Printing services have also been improved in Windows Server 2003. This server does a better job of file spooling. On other hand, print jobs should get to the printer faster. CLI utility has also enhanced for printer management and configuration. Installation is very easy in Server 2003 because of Plug-and-Play (PnP). We just need to connect the printer to the machine physically and have OS set it up automatically. Server 2003 supported up to 3800 printer’s drivers.
