Definition & Concepts on Creating and Understanding Spanned Volume
Create a Spanned Volume Windows Server 2003 is like enlarging the simple volume except that it spans different disks. Spanned volume can support two to 32 disks. Spanned volumes make different disks of the same or multiple sizes and access them as if they were one disk. In short, if we expend simple volume across different disks, it turns into a spanned volume. Spanned volumes are not fault tolerant and this volume cannot be mirrored. It does not offer any routine enhancements above simple volume. It also provides 100 percent drive utilization. When information is written on the spanned volume, firstly it written on the first disk, when that is full, then the information is written on the second disk and so on. We cannot delete even a piece of spanned volume without deleting it all. If any disks resides should fail and we will lose the data on the entire volume.
